 FREE Website Resources

Here are some marketing, graphics and informational links that you might find useful.

SUBMIT YOUR WEBSITE TO THE SEARCH ENGINES FOR FREE
You can use the Submit-Express service to send your website to the Search Engines.   They will send your website to Google, Yahoo, AOL, iWon, ExactSeek, Jayde and about 20 other search engines.  Note:  You will be asked for an email address. Since some search engines send numerous commercially oriented emails, make sure that you do not enter an email address which you want to keep free of such emails.  Instead, consider getting a temporary email address at any of the free services (yahoo.com, hotmail.com).

GET INFORMATION ABOUT 'ALMOST' ANY TOPIC
Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that you can use at any time. It is edited by people like you.  We have found it to be a great resource for information. http://en.wikipedia.org

NEED HTML HELP OR ANSWERS?
Sometimes on your website you might want to spice up your text, images, create tables, change colors, etc. All of this is simple to do as long as you have the right information or help.  http://www.webmonkey.com provides you with lots of FREE tutorials about website related topics.  Check them out!

FREE LOGOS AND BANNERS
You can create a great text logo or banner at http://www.cooltext.com.  Select from different styles of fonts and designs. This is also an excellent tool for creating text graphics for promotional drives and special offers.

TO SUBMIT YOUR WEBSITE MANUALLY TO THE SEARCH ENGINES
Although you can use an automatic tool to send your website to the search engines for free, manually submitting your website has many advantages.  Here are some links that you can use for this purpose:

  • For Google just submit the main page from your site. Google will be able to find the rest of your website pages from the links that you have on your main page.  Google is one of the search engines you really want to get your website listed with. http://www.google.com/addurl.html
  • Yahoo.com is also one of the most popular search engines around. You will need to read the guidelines and follow their instructions, so you can list your website. They also have a paid listing service that you can use.  http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest
  • AOL Search is used by many Internet users.  They use DMOZ (see below).  You will need to find the most appropriate subcategory page within the AOL Directory. Then click on the Submit a Site link at the bottom of the page. http://search.aol.com/add.adp
  • Open Directory DMOZ is the largest human-edited directory of the Web. Follow the instructions and submit your site. http://dmoz.org/add.html
  • Whatuseek is also a popular search engine. http://www.whatuseek.com/addurl-tableset.shtml
  • At Jayde.com the suggested websites are checked by a human editor.  Only if the editor approves your website will it get listed. Make sure that you choose the category that best matches your website content. http://dir.jayde.com/cgi-bin/submit.cgi
  • Scrub The Web is a very comprehensive index of websites. Add your URL,  and be very specific with your page title, description, and keywords. This way you can guarantee a proper listing.  http://www.scrubtheweb.com/addurl.html
  • EntireWeb has a free Basic Submit  where you can send up to five of your website pages for indexing. http://www.entireweb.com/free_submission

IMAGES AND CLIPART LINKS
Here are some links from websites that offer photo images and clipart that you might be able use on your website. Some provide free images, but be sure to check the licensing first!

WORK WITH YOUR IMAGES

  • Here are some links to websites that have available software that you can use to work with your images.  Most are FREE, others just require for your to sign up!  PXN8, Snipshot, Creating Online, Picture2Life, Preloadr, Fauxto.
  • http://www.mediaresizer.com Sometimes you have to resize the images that you are placing on your website.  It is important that your images are not too large, this will make faster your website and your customers will appreciate it.  In the above, you can find a link to a company that lets you use their software to resize images for a period of 15 days for free.  If you decide to buy their program Media Resizer, it will be a good investment.  We have used this software, and it is very simple to understand and very nice to work with it.

FREE COUNTERS
If you want a counter to see how many visitors your website receives, here are a couple of places that you can get one from:

FREE BACKUP
You can backup your important files on your computer to a FREE 2GB account from http://www.mozy.com.
Also you can use this FREE 1GB account with http://www.drivehq.com .  Great features.

FREE ANTI-VIRUS
We have used this free anti-virus for more than an year now.  Go to http://www.clamwin.com . Click on the Products menu, and then go to the bottom of the list of products.  There is a link to download a free anti-virus for your computer.  It works great.

FREE ENCRYPTION SOFTWARE
Sometimes you need to protect your files or storage devices (flash drives, pen drives,  SD cards,  etc.).  Encryption is the way to protect your files from other people, so they cannot use or read them without your permission.  In the case of pen drives or similar portable devices many people have lost them, and if they had protected them with encryption they will feel much better.  Check out http://www.truecrypt.org for a great FREE encryption program that works with Windows and Linux.

FREE PDF PRINTER
There are times that you want to print a web page or any other document, and you do not have a printer connected to your computer.  In these cases, it is nice to be able to print to a PDF document and save it on your computer.  You can get the software to install a FREE PDF Printer at http://www.pdfforge.org. Check that webpage for compatibilities with your operating system.  This will help you also to review a document on your screen before you print it on paper.   Amazing tool!
